One might conceivably have crowned this beautiful hilltop location with a palatial structure of the kind that stood here before the war, or set a glazed temple in the park-like grounds, but the outcome was different. The new travertine museum stands on the hill not unlike an ancient castle that has merged with its surroundings over the centuries. The historic staircase and terrace layout leading up from the Frankfurter Strasse in the valley below is simply continued to the top of the building like a stairway to heaven. A broad staircase with steps where people can sit ascends to the roof terrace, while on the other side, a narrower flight of stairs leads down again to street level. Even the roof rises gently in a series of steps, forming an open-air auditorium for all kinds of festive events and other informal uses. In this way, the architects sought to restore to the public the area of the park that the building now occupies.
