The Wadden Sea, an intertidal sea on the southeast edge of the North Sea, is a unique, ever-changing landscape and habitat. In 2009, it became a UNESCO Natural World Heritage site. The interest in this region continues to spur the development of tourism. Because the existing centre had become too small for the 90 000 visitors who come each year, the time had come to build a commanding, state-of-the-art information facility. This new building on the site of a former wastewater treatment plant in Sahlenburg National Park lies just a few metres from the sea. There were considerable challenges to be met along the way: extensive requirements in nature conservancy and flood protection, zoning restrictions, as well as a tight budget.
