In order to allow children to become acquainted with the principles of ecology and plant growth, the city of Amsterdam provides primary school pupils with their own, 6-m² garden allotment to care for. The corresponding theoretical information is taught in dedicated environmental education centres all across the city. One such facility, designed by bureau SLA, has been built in the north of the city. The architects’ goal was to make the new-build an educational tool in itself. This involved not merely designing a ‘plus-energy’ building, but also making its sustainability features tangible and understandable to the children.
