Lisbon has had a difficult relationship with its riverfront for over a century as much of the city has been cut off from the Tagus by railway tracks, roads and industrial port activity. In recent years things have begun to improve with the creation of several waterside promenades and plazas. One of the most significant recent such regeneration projects in the Portuguese capital is the creation of the MAAT Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology, located between the aforementioned railway and the river, with its recently unveiled new ‘Kunsthalle’ by British architects AL_A.
