Primary School in Chiarano

 - Jakob Schoof

For some time now, C+S Architects have addressed the question of making schools in Venetia focal points of social life. In Chiarano, some 50 km north-east of Venice, they have now implemented their concepts. Almost square on plan, the new school for 250 pupils lies on an arterial road to the west of the urban centre. The south-west front, with extensive areas of glazing in iroko frames, is shaded by a broad roof projection. The other three faces, consisting of vertically cored brickwork with a composite system of thermal insulation and coloured rendering, are punctuated by rectangular window openings. The north-east street facade has an anthracite-grey coloration, whereas the rendering to the east and west faces is largely painted red. This choice of colours recalls the “barchesse” – the agricultural buildings on historical estates in Venetia, which are often finished with brick-red rendering or facing bricks. Rectangular areas in grey, white, orange and dark red intensify the irregular pattern of the facades.
