Gourmet Restaurant in Vienna
Founded in 1897, Steirereck has been one of the world’s top culinary destinations for years; in Austria the gourmet restaurant regularly occupies the prime spot in the industry ranking. Due to growing space requirements and the steadily increasing demands of the catering sector, a new extension and renovation project had become necessary. An invited competition in 2012 was intentionally not directed at experienced specialists. On the contrary, the client was looking for the input of studios that had never worked on a restaurant before. Experimental Viennese architectural practice PPAG was commissioned and faced with a slew of disparate requirements: “Unique and elegant, timeless and innovative”, moreover the new space had to work as an all-rounder that could offer a coherent solution both for dealing with the 1903 milk bar that now houses the group’s Meierei café as for dealing with the building’s exposed position in Vienna’s Stadtpark.
