The new research building by Berlin-based architects BHBVT is located nearby to Erich Mendelsohn’s Einstein Tower on the Telegrafenberg in Potsdam, a forested science park where research into natural sciences has been conducted since the 1870s. The new-build accommodates 190 out of 340 researchers as well as a new computing centre for the Potsdam Institute for Climate Research, Germany’s foremost climate research institute. To tie the 6,600 m² volume into its wooded surroundings, the architects designed the floor plan in a clover-leaf formation and specified vertical larchwood louvers for the facade cladding. These louvers protrude well beyond the flat roof plane, thus concealing the coolers of the data centre from view.
