Place Eugène Verboekhoven lies on the joint between two residential districts in Schaerbeek, a northern suburb of Brussels. It is a typical example of a star-shaped, late 19th century public space. Four streets cross here, the most important is the 2 km long axis which, in the manner of Haussmann's boulevards, connects the Town Hall with Schaerbeek Railway Station. But it has a serious blemish: the Brussels ring railway runs in a cutting through the middle of the public space. It was built in 1866 - a few years before the square itself. In addition at street level there are stops for three tramlines and two bus routes.
