Working in the realm of art requires large, flexible spaces, but not necessarily a constant spatial climate. In accordance with this precept, the French architects Lacaton & Vassal designed a new structure for the University of Architecture in Nantes ten years ago. Only a few blocks further west, on what was formerly a works site, the Franklin Azzi office has now created the present complex for the School of Fine Arts Nantes Saint Nazaire in a similar style - as an open hall structure with a lightweight outer envelope. The site, where ship turbines were once manufactured, is situated on the Île de Nantes, an island in the River Loire in the centre of the city. The area is at present subject to change - from a harbour district into one with mixed uses, including housing, offices and university amenities. The school of fine arts is but one element in the conversion of the overall site. In the adjoining halls, spatial facilities are being created for the University of Nantes, a centre with offices for start-up enterprises and a complex for creative industries with studios and workshops.
