The docklands in Amsterdam are still undergoing a considerable transformation, as brownfield land is being converted into residential and commercial properties. Most of the developments are currently being undertaken north of the city centre in the Buiksloterham district. The city is running competitive tender processes and awarding sites to bidders with the strongest concepts and the most sustainable designs. In order retain public influence on the urban development in the long run, the land is not being sold, but being made available on a long-term lease basis.
