Green: School and Community Centre in Heidelberg

 - Jakob Schoof

The world's largest passive house district has been under construction in Heidelberg for ten years. After its completion in 2022, the Bahnstadt on the site of a former freight station will offer living space for around 6,500 people and employment opportunities for up to 6,000. An important communal meeting place for the new district has now been created with the school and community centre by Datscha Architekten from Stuttgart. The result of an open, two-stage competition held in 2013, it combines a triple-storey primary school, a kindergarten and a community centre. The new-build expresses its public character in a number of ways, through its location on Gadamerplatz in the geographical centre of the Bahnstadt, its low height and its brick facades stand out from the monotony of the surrounding white rendered five to six-storey apartment blocks.
