Bluish-grey bricks and timber are traditional materials used in the erection of houses in the Chinese subprovincial city of Hangzhou. In creating the present community centre in the village of Dongziguan, the architects of gad line + studio have adopted the vernacular style of the location and combined the regional building culture with modern methods of construction. Each of the six free-standing rectangular forms of the complex accommodates a specific spatial function. The walls are constructed with an inner core layer of in-situ concrete flanked on each side by a thin skin of solid facing bricks, but without an internal cavity.
