Report: Flowers in the Gallery

The Tableau brand celebrates the beauty of things. In collaboration with company founder Julius Værnes Iversen, Studio David Thulstrup developed the idea for a store concept that presents floral arrangements on custom-made plinths as if in a gallery space. The handcrafted individual pieces were created together with artists such as Poul Isbak and are, just like the flowers, for sale. The right setting for the shop was provided by a 19th-century building in the centre of Copenhagen in which the uncovered traces of the past on the ceilings and walls contrast with the intricate floral arrangements. An ultramarine-blue vinyl floor forms the back-drop for several sculpturally-shaped podiums made out of a wide variety of materials; in addition to solid terrazzo and granite, there are transparent bases made of glass bricks, grey safety glass or perforated metal. The most striking feature is an orthogonally stacked object composed of more than 200 chrome-plated steel square tubes. By using these various forms, Thulstrup also wishes to explore the monumental potential of materials. The prevailing lighting atmosphere is correspondingly neutral. LED luminaires mounted under mirrored metal plates ensure an even brightness. Potted plants are particularly at home on a circular shelf that features integrated UV lighting. At night, the colour spectrum changes from a cool white to a growth-promoting mix of red and blue.PP
