Fishery Cooperative Building in Bonifacio

 - Sabine Drey

The almost 90-metre-long building of the Bonifacio fishery cooperative in southern Corsica extends along a narrow strip of land between the cliffs and the sea. Here twenty local fishermen each have a workshop measuring 10 m², in which they can dry, repair and store their nets, traps and long- lines. They can now offer their catch for sale daily at a counter just a few metres from the jetties of the yacht and fishing harbour. Publicly accessible areas between the workshops and on top of the large, widely cantilevered roof slab augment the private functions. Two outdoor staircases provide access for visitors to a roof terrace that is designed as a landscape promenade. From there, across the fjord-like bay, they have a spectacular view of the old town opposite with its citadel standing proudly above the cliffs.
