National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) in Washington D. C.

The museum, in the direct neighbourhood of the Washington Monument, documents the history of the African-American people in the USA. The building contains galleries, theatres, offices and archives. The objective of the architect’s design was to make meaningful reference to the historical location while, at the same time, reflecting America’s considerable African inheritance. Three important elements define the design: the crown-like overall form, the long, open canopy at the entrance from the grounds and the bronze, diaphanous building envelope. Over half the building is below ground, while five storeys stand above. The inclined angle and the sizes of the bronze mesh elements of the building envelope make reference to the stones of the Washington Monument, but their ornamentation alludes to African craftsmanship.
