Holiday Home in Nagano

Along the northern shore of the glacial Lake Nojiri in the Nagano Prefecture, Sugawaradaisuke Architects created a holiday home. It is defined by artful visual connections that encompass the building’s five levels and incorporate its exterior space. The predominantly open lattice work made of cedar permits the free placement of walls and ceilings. The structure is cantilevered on the upper floors, which results in the creation of semi-open spaces with generous views towards the east, the south and the west. Large glazed surfaces offer visual connections to the forest and the lake. The kitchen is situated on an intermediary floor, which allows the dining room table to merge into the floor surface of the level above. A strip window renders the gap between these levels transparent. All spaces merge visually all the way up to the roof. The raised terrace connects the exterior and the vestibule seamlessly and unites both areas within a continuum.
