The Geoffroy-Guichard football stadium in Saint-Étienne, eastern France, was opened in 1931 and has been continually rebuilt and enlarged since then. In the run-up to the UEFA European Championship 2016, it was completely refurbished and its capacity increased from 35,000 to 42,000. Architects Chaix & Morel et Associés working with contractor Léon Grosse won the design competition. The project envisaged a meticulous revitalisation and enlargement of the stadium that would include not only functional improvements, more seating and greater comfort for players and spectators, but also, and more importantly, a new identity and a unified appearance for the first time. The stadium had to be kept available during the works.
