Tottenham, a district in north London, is home to some 130,000 people from all over the world. It has a greater ethnic diversity than any other part of the capital. Here, some 193 different languages are spoken. In 2011, Tottenham became infamous for the riots that broke out there and spread over the whole of England. In the neighbourhood where the Russell Jones project is located, however, the situation remained relatively quiet. In the main, families and younger people live here. Some of them have been residents for generations. Others have moved here only recently, driven out of more central areas of London by strained housing conditions. Every effort is being made to increase the density in this district, and vacant sites between the little Victorian and Edwardian terraced houses are suitable land for development.
