Holiday Home on Fanø

 - Heide Wessely

By adopting the aesthetics of raw, unfinished materials the young, Copenhagen-based architects reinterpret the traditional long houses of Fanø. The island is located about 50 kilometres north of Sylt in the Wadden Sea. It experiences strong western winds throughout the entire year. This is also why houses are tucked tightly beneath long, steep gable roofs. The narrow gable ends minimize the area impacted by the storm winds. In the past the long houses were used as both barn and dwelling. Today many of them serve touristic purposes. There are plenty of holiday homes on Fanø: roughly 2700 of them, quite many considering a population count of only 3488 individuals.
