The attempt to combine architectural modernism with regional influences on a large scale has a long tradition in the north Indian state of Punjab. Some 80 km from Le Corbusier’s Chandigarh, Irish architects McCullough Mulvin have been working on giving a new look to the local university campus in Patiala since 2015. The university was founded in 1956 by the Thapar family of industrialists, but until now the 100-hectare complex lacked a sense of cohesion and a central meeting point. McCullough Mulvin and their Indian partners, Designplus Associates, have now created this with the Thapar University Learning Laboratory, having already developed a master plan for the campus and designed two student housing complexes.
