Residential Complex in Mechelen

 - Sabine Drey

Rough brick from different time periods characterises the heterogeneous building complex in the centre of the Belgian city of Mechelen. Using brick as a construction material is a long-standing tradition in Belgium. On this site it was repeatedly used for facades, floors and for solid construction components such as walls or stairs. The oldest residential buildings of the ensemble originate in the 17th century. In the years to follow they were repeatedly expanded, altered and sold in units increasing in size. In the 18th century the Apostolic monastic community purchased the site. Following further interventions it was last used as a factory complex for a bed manufacturer.
