The light, airy, communal sports hall in Vila-seca, Catalonia, has only little in common with the existing structure dating from 1986. The earlier building, with its precast concrete elements and suspended soffits, is reminiscent of an industrial development. It forms part of the sporting campus of Vila-seca, a suburb of Tarragona in Spain. The architects were commissioned to convert the older facilities as the venue for the Greek-Roman wrestling competitions in the context of the 2018 Mediterranean Games. This important sporting event is held every four years in a different Mediterranean city and, as a token of sustainability, has to be staged in existing structures. As part of the conversion of the present hall, a further use was also conceived – primarily as a hockey arena.
