The architect couple designed their own holiday home located in the ski resort of Kvitfjell north of Lillehammer. They opted for a construction comprised almost entirely of timber. The site is located in the mountains, at an elevation of nearly 1000 m. Casper and Lexie Mork-Ulnes intended to intervene as little as possible into the surrounding natural environment and its wildlife. For this purpose, the building is placed on stilts, leaving the ground below mostly untouched. The roughly 1 m tall space beneath the building is used for storing firewood and as a shelter for sheep and other wildlife. The elevated position offers another advantage: In winter, windows and doors aren’t covered in snow and, in return, don’t need to be cleared, thereby preventing hard work. The gently pitched green roof both relates to the natural environment and is practical. When snow falls on top of it in winter, the snow cover forms an additional layer of insulation.
