Residential Building Eisberg in Berlin

 - Jakob Schoof

Bugenhagenstrasse is a quiet, yet centrally located side street in Berlin-Moabit, traditionally a working class quarter. For a long time the area was one of the last in Berlin's inner city that gentrification had seemed to have avoided. Currently, revalorization and renewal are in full swing. The residential building comprises a timber hybrid structure, realised by rundzwei Architekten. It occupies a narrow lot, vacant since the end of World War II. In a skilled planning feat the architects created eleven barrier free accessible apartments on a footprint of only 100 m². For the neighbouring building from the 1950s they planned a two-storey roof addition with seven further residential units.

The northern street facade hints at why the architects call the new building “Eisberg” (iceberg). When the perforated shutters are closed, they seem only an iota darker than the surrounding cladding. © Gui Rebelo
