Carnival: A Catalyst for the Future

 - Frank Kaltenbach

The Fábrica de Cultura art school is the new cultural centre of Barranquilla. The opening ceremony on 20 January 2022 was like a giant carnival. Wearing extravagant costumes and masks, a crowd representing Colombia's ethnically highly diverse population inaugurated the Fábrica de Cultura (Culture factory) School of Arts and Popular Traditions in Barranquilla. Students are accepted based on talent alone, regardless of their age or grades. Instead of 1,400 students as planned, 2,800 have enrolled, and classes take place in two shifts, just like in a factory.
