Theatre in Geneva

 - Claudia Fuchs

In Geneva's Eaux-Vives district, following the creation of an underground railway station, a narrow, long plot of land was cleared and became the site for an esplanade and the new building for the Nouvelle Comédie, the new centre of the heterogeneous quarter. At a first glance, the striking, longitudinal rectangular building with its staggered silhouette resembles a factory hall. To Fres Architectes, theatre isn't simply an event space. More so, it is a place for creative work and artistic production that includes rehearsal studios as well as stage workshops. The functional program is clearly structured and delineated by the building contours: Four different peaks conceal the workshops, the fly system for the large auditorium, the artist wardrobes and the black box with stacked rehearsal studios.

The generous entrance hall openly faces the new esplanade, also used by the theatre café. Light coloured exposed concrete and a certain workshoplike character define the publicly accessible areas of the theatre. © Yves André
