The German Werkstätten and the garden city in Hellerau are inseparably linked with the name of their founder, Karl Schmid. Schmid, a joiner by training, came from the Erzgebirge and devoted his energies at an early stage to the machine production of furniture, although craft skills remained of great importance to him. The company he founded in 1898, the Dresden Workshops for Arts and Crafts, soon engaged numerous artists of repute in a collaboration between craft trades, industry and art to produce simple functional furniture at reasonable prices.
