he closure of a blast-furnace plant in the north of Duisburg in 1985 left behind a 500-acre industrial wasteland. A few years later, in the context of the international building show in Emscher Park, the authorities responsible for this area sought to set a signal for a much-needed rehabilitation of the Ruhr region. The outcome was a leisure park in which visitors can participate in various sporting and arts activities located among the monuments of a past industrial building culture.
