Two Family House in London

Blockmaker’s Arms in the London Borough of Hackney hasn’t been a pub anymore for a long time. Already in the 1970s the corner building on Shepherdess Walk was transformed into housing with three residential units. The London-based architectural office of Erbar Mattes combined the two lower units into a maisonette apartment. They transformed the backyard into an urban garden, bordered by an addition covered in handmade clinker.

The lettering on the exterior bears witness to the previous function as a pub. The rendered front facade contrasts strongly with the exposed brick of the courtyard. © Simon Menges
