Fire Station in Straubenhardt

Bordering the Northern Black Forest, Straubenhardt is the first municipality in Baden-Württemberg to dedicate itself to the Cradle-to-Cradle principle. Inspired by a talk held by Michael Braungart, Mayor Helge Viehweg communicated the importance of both circular economy and circular construction to the local residents. The first building project realised accordingly is the new fire station. The previously six independent fire departments of the individual parts of the town are now concentrated on a strategically advantageous site. The entire scope of planning is based on handling resources consciously, aimed at ensuring that construction materials used – for the most part, timber and concrete – are pollutant-free, simply reversible and reusable. At the same time, the building is designed for a long lifecycle and easy maintenance.
