Housing Project in Brussels

 - Sabine Drey

The residential complex in the Brussels municipality of Saint-Gilles is as varied as its history. The 80 m deep property extends between block borders, from a neoclassical house erected in 1875 on Rue d’Angleterre to a 1972 industrial building along Rue de Hollande. Former stables from 1912 are situated between them. Prior to the intervention, they were predominantly used for storage and repeatedly remodelled, until a communal housing group purchased the complex and transformed it into a shared living environment. They created 15 apartments ranging from 45 to 250 m² in size, two ateliers, and a community space.
