In order to enable the barrier free access of the newly designed and interactive exhibition in the Kepler Museum in Regensburg, the architects created an addition featuring an elevator and a foyer on the southern side of the listed medieval trade building. Monolithic masonry brick envelops a slender volume with a facade curving upward elliptically and crowned by a gable roof. It fits in harmoniously between the medieval towers and patrician townhouses of the old city of Regensburg. This also allowed minimising interventions in the historic spaces of the existing structure with its 12th century vaults. The renewal of the old city centre supervised by Hans Döllgast in the 1960s also marks the beginning of using the museum to present the astronomer's life and work in the same edifice in which he deceased in 1620.
