On the campus of Merseburg University of Applied Sciences, the Leipzig-based office of Aline Hielscher Architektur demonstrates the potential of retrofitting the existing building fabric by remodelling a two-storey facility. Previously a central telephone office, the new daycare centre combines flexible spaces for engaging pedagogy and a sustainable energy concept on nearly 800 m². The renovated building offers room for 42 hildren, their parents preferably studying or working at the university. The facility is also intended as a place for research on daycare centres: Rules and daily routines are developed cooperatively with the children and are oriented on their needs. The everyday experiences of groups of children of various ages are discussed among the professional staff within the continuous cooperation with the nearby faculty of pedagogy. This leads to an intensive exchange of ideas between theory and practice.
