Building Organisation and Living Concept
The 72 apartments of The Wave are distributed over up to seven storeys across three building volumes that open towards both a spacious inner courtyard and the river. Contemporary building services are combined with a high standard of fit‑out: oak parquet flooring in the living areas, modern, well‑appointed bathrooms and a lushly landscaped inner courtyard define the residential character. Numerous carefully considered details contribute to a high level of comfort and quality of life for the residents.
Facade and Balcony Concept as a Defining Design Element
The project takes its name from its facade design. A striking wave structure extends across the entire exterior envelope of the building, while the balconies in particular echo this motif, following the dynamic line of the waterfront. Inspired by the way wind ripples across the surface of water, the architect shaped the balconies accordingly, allowing the natural‑stone cubatures to assume a wave‑like form that gives the building its distinctive appearance. Due to their durability and ease of maintenance, the balcony floor surfaces were clad with Twinson Character Massive decking boards from Deceuninck, covering a total area of 815 square metres.
Material Selection: Low‑Maintenance WPC Decking for Outdoor Spaces
Twinson decking boards are manufactured from a high‑quality WPC material (wood plastic composite), a composite of wood and polymer. They are slip‑resistant, do not rot, and feature a pleasant, barefoot‑friendly surface free from splinters, cracks or resin residues. Their inherent robustness makes the boards ideally suited for intensively used outdoor areas. While traditional timber decks often require regular treatment or repainting, Twinson decking can be maintained simply by cleaning once a year with a pressure washer.
Sustainability, Certifications and Technical Properties
Responsible use of resources is a key principle at Deceuninck. The solid boards, produced in Europe, are made from PEFC‑certified spruce wood sourced from sustainably managed forests and represent an environmentally friendly, low‑maintenance alternative to tropical hardwood decking. The polymer component of the eco core consists of 100 % recycled PVC. In addition, the boards are fully recyclable and can be reintroduced into the recycling process at the end of their service life. Twinson decking is also certified with the VinylPlus label, providing independent confirmation of its sustainability credentials.
Fire Safety and Regulatory Classification
In terms of fire protection, the system achieves the fire classification Bfl‑s1. It also complies with regulatory requirements as a hard roofing element and is tested for resistance to flying sparks and radiant heat in accordance with classification Broof(t1).
Design Flexibility Through a Wide Range of Colours
Further design flexibility is offered by an extensive colour range: Twinson Character Massive boards are available in six naturally inspired colours, allowing them to be seamlessly integrated into a wide variety of architectural concepts.
