Discussion: The Pathos of Masonry

Pathos is in vogue, despite a general suspicion that it is hollow; and in architecture, what could be more imbued with pathos than masonry? Where masonry is concerned, we usually have quite specific characteristics in mind, with properties that link it to a certain location - properties like the actual materials used, their colour, weight and permanence. In masonry work, it is above all the element of "work" that strikes an ethical and aesthetic chord (and legitimates many things).
