Report: Trabocchi - Anonymous Timber Architecture in Italy

The "trabocco" is a pile structure used for fishing. Built on rocks in the sea and braced with thick ropes, trabocchi are known to have existed since the 18th century. They are probably a development of a kind of fish trap fixed to the bows of boats. Trabocchi are found especially along the central Adriatic and southern Tyrrhenian coasts of Italy, where many different regional forms exist. The name is possibly derived from the Latin word "trabs", which can mean a timber beam, a tree or a house. Many different kinds of wood have been used in their construction: chestnut, pine, fir, elm and robinia, as well as timbers from demolished buildings, old foundation piles and telephone masts. The structures are braced with wires and hemp ropes.
