In Germany, energy-saving buildings have a long tradition. More than 15 years ago, the low-energy building was made the statutory minimum standard for new buildings (laid down in the German Energy Saving Ordinance/EnEV). Thanks to intensive research and development work it has now become possible to improve buildings to an extent that they can generate energy instead of using it. This outshines any other developments that still require a residual amount of energy for running the building.
