Discussion: The Purpose and Attraction of Recycling
When Marcel Duchamp used bicycle wheels and pissoirs as works of art, the world was shocked. Things have changed since then, however. What is waste? What is a functional object? What is art? Since 2006, the flagship store of the brothers Markus and Daniel Freitag in Zurich, a 25-metre-high tower, has become a landmark (ill. 14). But 17 years after the founding of the Freitag concern, the 2010 collection has a markedly different look. Similarly, the planned new production building does not consist of second-hand containers. The origins of the reused materials - like recycled concrete - are no longer evident.
