Technology: Retrofit interior insulation of exterior walls

Many architects and clients categorically reject interior insulation. "It shifts the dew point!" "Walls can no longer breathe." "This only leads to mould" This bad image may be a result of experience. However, it is generally based on inadequate analysis of existing conditions, planning, and application. Based on European Union climate protection goals and the finite supply of fuel, thermal insulation requirements are repeatedly stepped up every couple of years. Since new construction uses only a minor share of overall heating, existing construction increasingly requires renovation to reduce energy consumption. Not only listed buildings confront planners with the problem that exterior insulation, while mostly permissible from the viewpoint of building physics, can't be applied. Bordering construction, preservation of facade materials, and limited budgets comprise further potential difficulties.
