Few inner-city service stations have a convincing architectural design. In 1999, how-ever, the Allguth concern asked a number of architects to draw up proposals for a new type that could be used in various situations. In the context of this competition, Lydia Haack + John Höpfner Architects in Munich were able to convince the clients with their concept. Four service stations of this new type have been erected in the Munich area over the past four years. Two of these structures won Renault Traffic Design Awards in 2004. The developments are well integrated into the existing surroundings and offer maximum flexibility for later modifications. The load-bearing system for all functional areas comprises a uniform steel skeleton frame laid out to a three-dimensional grid. The structures are enclosed in glass, ribbed-metal sheeting, metal panels and other materials, including transparent pneumatic elements.
