The hybrid existence of stage design, somewhere between the visual arts, literature, film, architecture, applied design and theatre, can be described from a number of perspectives. Seen as an integral part of the director's concept for a play, it has relatively little independence. It serves the production by creating the space in which a work takes place. A stage set can, however, go beyond the production of a particular play by establishing new points of reference and can, indeed, determine the overall impression gained by the audience.
