Discussion: The Status of German Architecture Abroad - Two Statements

Speaking at the opening of the exhibition "New German Architecture" in Berlin, Ernst Hubeli remarked that Austria is one of those small neighbouring countries whose architectural level Germany has yet to attain. That, of course, is all part of a gladly cultivated myth in Austria. Smaller than the state of Bavaria, and with only 2,500 registered architects, it claims to possess more creative members of that profession than its German neighbour. Statistically, of course, that is nonsense, but it reflects the fact that German architecture is not greatly appreciated in Austria. It is regarded as humdrum, functional and technological - and sometimes profoundly "Germanic".
