In the early days of modern concrete construction, with all the revolutionary possibilities opened up by this material, the focus was on its structural applications. But gradually awareness spread to an appreciation of surface qualities. The first examples of exposed concrete were untreated surfaces straight out of the mould, nowadays we have a wide range of means to control and vary its appearance. After a period of intensive development in concrete technology it is time to take a look at some of the older methods of surface design and try them again, under new conditions, perhaps with new results.
