Magazine: Fire station in Wolfurt

The new fire station in the community of Wolfurt, Austria, is a flat, elongated block with fair-faced concrete facades and a freestanding fire station tower. With a requirement of 17 kWh/m2a for heating purposes, the new building almost achieves passive house level. Seven ventilation units with heat exchangers supply the new building with fresh air, while a 50 m2 thermal solar installation on the roof covers 75 % of the hot water requirement. The remaining energy supply is shared by the new building and the adjacent primary school, which was renovated almost simultaneously. A groundwater heat pump supplies heat for heating the two buildings. Their power consumption is counterbalanced by a 192 m2 PV installation on the roof of the school.
