Current ideas in energy-efficiency in buildings are taking a more holistic approach to assessing energy consumption, instead of just focusing on single factors in isolation. The "net zero energy" building is one such initiative. Moreover, these comparisons are based on primary energy consumption, with greater weight being attached to energy sources and methods of generation. The aim is to optimise the "building system" as a whole, not just concentrate on single aspects such as minimising heating demand. As such these approaches are ushering in a new era in energy thinking in buildings.
