Research and practice: Plastics in sustainable construction

A large variety of plastics finds use in construction. Adapting the properties of the material − e.g. by including bulking agents, reinforcing materials, colour pigments, stabilisers, plasticizers, flame retardants, and foaming agents − allows it to meet various requirements that other construction materials can't meet. The high cost of plastics manufacturing, however, make efficient handling essential, with a sustainability plan crucial to efficiency. This efficient handling can be based either on the material itself or on the way it is used.
