New Bathrooms in Context — Retreat or Boundary-Free Space?
Bathrooms tell us much about the people who use them, their living preferences and their needs with regard to privacy and intimacy. They may also tell us about the residential setting. This diversity is illustrated by the projects featured below, with bathrooms that conjure up exotic oriental worlds, bathrooms that bring together the classical elements of fire and water, bathrooms that command urban vistas, even bathrooms — or at least bathtubs — in the bedroom. The design of a bathroom and its positioning within the home is not only dictated by functional considerations. Nor does a bathroom simply mirror design trends or state-of-the-art innovation. It is also the place where we experience the transition from day to night, or from night to day. Its size and style reflect the significance we attach to bodily care and regeneration.
