Changing Scenes: Shops in Tokyo

The BbyB. Chocolate Shop is located in the Ginza shopping district. Here, the interplay between packaging and presentation is realized in an exemplary way. The products of a Belgian chocolate maker are available in many different flavours with uniform packaging. The architecture adopts the packaging dimensions and creates a row of products along a central counter. Displays made of acrylic glass serve to eliminate physical presence and to focus relevance onto the product. Surfaces in neutral white support this effect. The cafe area in the rear of the tunnel-shaped space is separated from the actual shop by a glass partition and enveloped in uniform black: a minimalist atmosphere is maintained. Cabinets are integrated into the rear wall behind the counter. The transparent extractable shelves also adopt the dimensions of the packaging. Even the cash register is built into this piece of furniture and can be hid completely. A digital display that is fit into the counter communicates the price of the merchandise, isolated from distracting technology.
