With a population of 100,000, Tartu is Estonia's second largest city. The city is home not only to the country's oldest university, but also to the Estonian National Museum, which was founded in 1909. Following the destruction of the original building during the 2nd World War its collection was dispersed to several different sites in the city centre. This new building, which opened in October 2016, is the design of the French firm DGT. Dorell.Ghotmeh.Tane / Architects. Now, for the first time, it is possible to exhibit the entire collection under one roof. A conversation with the architect Dan Dorell, the landscape architect Karin Bachmann, and Tiit Sild, former City Architect of Tartu, about how the museum originated also sheds light on Estonia's recent history.
