Glass has many positive characteristics besides transparency: surface hardness, diffusion impermeability and UV resistance. On the negative side, glass is brittle and sudden failure is a risk. For this reason, in safety-critical applications laminated safety glass is used. Here a minimum of two panes of glass are laminated with PVB foil to ensure the glass retains some residual strength in the event of breakage. At glasstec in Düsseldorf the results of two research projects were presented that showcase the performance capabilities of SentryGlas® foil from DuPont (SG foil), an alternative to conventional PVB foils and conventional adhesives.
